" What we do

What we do

For nearly 20 years, Maine youth in care have led efforts resulting in powerful partnerships that have improved the child welfare system. YLAT boasts many achievements that include the passage of legislation, the development and revision of child welfare agency policies, and the development of national standards serving youth in care.

YLAT brings together young people who are involved with the child welfare system, adults from the system, and local community members. YLAT believes that by creating opportunities for and with young people, youth can learn and practice leadership and advocacy skills and powerfully positive changes will result. YLAT members advise policy makers to improve programs, promote that youth in care need to be engaged in decisions about their lives, and contribute to improved outcomes for all young people in care.
