YOUTH EMPOWERMENT ACCOUNTS

Youth under 18 in foster care can now open bank accounts without a guardian signature!

Talk to your Youth Transition Specialist with questions about Youth Empowerment Accounts, to find a participating Credit Union, or for help getting the required documents. 

What do I need to open an account?

  • Birth certificate

  • Social Security Card

  • Photo State ID issued through the DMV

  • Valid email address (not a school email)

  • ​Opening deposit (under $25)

Opportunity Passport

  • Opportunity Passport provides critical financial support to hundreds of young Mainers transitioning to adulthood, many of whom have experienced homelessness or other challenges.

YLAT is a joint project between Maine youth who have experienced foster care, Maine's Department of Health and Human Services, and the Catherine Cutler Institute at University of Southern Maine. YLAT is committed to improving the short-term and long-term outcomes for youth who have experienced foster care.
